The shaking transmitted through the drive chains and frame of the aircraft caused the split propeller to hit a supporting guy wire, causing it to snap. The wire tore out of its fastening and shattered the propeller, while the rudder swivelled to the horizontal and sent the Flyer into a nose dive.
